Andrew Shaw & Simon Walters successful in major Organised Crime Group prosecution
26 July 2016
Andrew Shaw and Simon Walters recently secured the successful prosecution of a major Organised Crime Group (OCG) in East Anglia and the Home Counties. The OCG, of whom 8 members were prosecuted, was supplying cocaine in large scale quantities at more than four times average street level purity. The OCG, which was a sophisticated commercial enterprise, also imported cannabis at a huge scale. One police operation during the course of the investigation intercepted 3.69 tonnes of cannabis in a single lorry load. The cannabis alone had a street value of more than £10.5m. More than half a dozen such trips had taken place beforehand.
The case, which involved complex disclosure elements, was heard over a 7 week period earlier in the year at the St Albans Crown Court. Earlier this month the defendants were sentenced. With sentences ranging from 12 years to 3 years 4 months, the total imprisonment handed down was almost 70 years. The trial was the result of Operation Forge, an Eastern Regions Special Operations Unit (ERSOU) operation over a number of years. One defendant awaits trial in 2017.
