Drystone barristers appear in case concerning the ‘execution’ of a drug dealer
12 February 2019
Alastair Malcolm QC, Sally Hobson and Claire Matthews recently concluded a 6 week trial at Cambridge Crown Court in a shocking trial that attracted much press attention due to the nature of the crime.
The victim, Sam Mechelewski, was found dead in a country park in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, in 1 February last year. His "cold-blooded murder" was carried out by two fellow drug dealers the day before, in order to steal £2,000 and drugs to gain "respect", the court were told. Defendants Jordan Shepherd and Ashley White both denied murder. Alastair Malcolm QC and Sally Hobson represented Ashley White, whilst Claire Matthews represented the girlfriend of Jordan Shepherd, Ciara Ratcliff. Ciara was accused of giving a false alibi for her then boyfriend and lying to police about when she last saw Mr Mechelewski. She was charged with perverting the course of justice and was acquitted. Ashley White was convicted of murder and sentenced to 29 years, with fellow defendant Shepherd also found guilty and sentenced to life.
