Karim Khalil QC, leading Wayne Cleaver, successfully concludes ‘tragic’ murder prosecution
3 October 2018
Karim Khalil QC, leading Wayne Cleaver, successfully prosecuted William Billingham for the brutal murder of his eight year old daughter, further to a two week trial at Birmingham Crown Court that attracted national press attention. To see the background to this tragic matter, see our previous news item from the start of the trial here.
In January 2018 the defendant stabbed his eight year old daughter through the heart causing her tragic death. He chose not to give evidence and claimed to have no memory of the attack. Karim Khalil QC told the court the attack was "swift, deliberate, clinical, brutal". He went on: "This was no accident and it was not a slight injury. It was a deep, violent thrust of a lethal weapon into the most vulnerable part of his young daughter's body."
In sentencing Billingham to a minimum of 27 years, Judge Paul Farrer QC told him it was an act of "revenge" which was "driven by jealousy and anger".
A spokesman for the NSPCC said: “It is difficult to comprehend how a father could brutally and senselessly murder the eight-year-old daughter he was responsible for keeping safe from harm. “Mylee’s family will be suffering unimaginable pain but we hope today’s sentencing will help them as they try to come to terms with what happened.”
