Wayne Cleaver secures conviction of transgender sex offender

Wayne Cleaver recently secured the conviction of a transgender male for nine sexual offences against a young child over a four year period. The offender had previously been convicted of raping a girl of 12 years and grooming a girl of 15 years. The trial required especially delicate handling due to the sensitive gender and diversity issues arising from the defendant’s transgender identity. This case represents one of a growing number in which transgender defendants have been accused of serious sexual offences against children and consequently the trial received national media coverage.
